Taken At Midnight

Knowing what we know about the man's inhumanity and depravity, would you dare to cross Adolph Hitler? Set in 1930s Germany at a time when Hitler's repulsive powers were ascending, this superb production is the very definition of disturbing. It's a play by Mark Hayhurst and it tells the tragic story of Hans Litten, the lawyer who had the temerity to challenge Hitler in the courts, issuing the leader with a subpoena for the trial of three men accused of murder.

Hitler was less than pleased. In fact he was furious, and took Litten into so-called custody. Which was bad enough... but the lawyer eventually ended up in Dachau concentration camp, paying with his life for his bravery and determination to see justice served.

Hans’ mother Irmgard sits at the heart of the play, a woman who brings every ounce of dignity, passion and commitment at her disposal to fight for her son's life. She pleads his case to the Gestapo to no avail and the British are no help either, with Lord Clifford Allen, the pacifist British aristocrat, clearly on the Nazis' side. The result is an emotional ordeal you'll never forget, a genuine tragedy that sold out at the Chichester Festival theatre to rave reviews.
