Harvey
It's genuinely hilarious. The play, written in 1944, is a fresh Pulitzer prize-winning comedy. The well-loved 1950 movie starring James Stewart delighted millions. It's been adapted for TV and now it's on the London stage. Harvey is the story of a gentle, kind man, Elwood P. Dowd, his imaginary rabbit friend Harvey, a six foot tall creature only Elwood can see, and their rewarding, unwavering friendship.
The other-worldly Elwood refuses to let go of the idea of Harvey and his sister Veta Louise becomes increasingly worried about his mental state. She even does her best to have him committed to an asylum for treatment in an effort to get a cure for her embarrassing brother. Elwood's rabbit habit is deeper-seated than anyone realises. But is he mad as a hatter or perfectly sane? And is Harvey actually real?
When a young doctor at the asylum starts seeing the giant rabbit himself, things become even stranger. The boundary between sanity and madness is explored in a charming fashion through this delightful play, both funny and poignant, which looks set to become a twenty first century feel-good stage hit. If you're up for a lovely, light-hearted night out, it's perfect.
