Isn't it heavenly to see more of the West End's theatres re-opening after the Covid crisis? Thank you so much to everyone involved for working so hard to make it so. If West End audiences ever deserved top class entertainment, it's now. Welcome to Love Letters, a classic of a hugely popular two-handed play that's been delighting audiences since 1989, when it premiered in New York. Expect a gentle yet deliciously compelling romance that's tragi-comic in its intensity and complexity, and you won't be disappointed.
When young, rich Melissa writes a thank you letter to young, rich Andy after he attends her birthday party, both of their lives are changed forever. They carry on writing down the years, while they're at different summer camps, while they're at university, through thick and thin, through marriage and the failure of marriage. The love letters exchanged by Melissa and Andy enrich their lives, and ultimately create a remote romance. But it's Andy’s last letter, written to Melissa’s mother after her untimely death, that finally makes it beautifully clear how much they really meant to each other and gave to each other, all thanks to a lifetime of writing, a life of physical separation but emotional closeness.
