You know a show’s exceptional when it sells out every night for a month. Tickets for A View From The Bridge at the Ustinov Studio sold out in under an hour. Now this new revival of Arthur Miller’s classic 1950s drama – known and loved as one of the great works of 20th century American theatre – heads for the West End for spring 2024. It stars Dominic West and Callum Scott Howells, and opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on May 23rd for a ten week run. First premiering on Broadway in 1955, the play is set in Fifties New York.
The plot? This is what occurs when the Italian-American dockworker Eddie welcomes two cousins from Sicily, Marco and Rodolpho, into his house. Before long Rodolpho and Catherine, Eddie's niece, take a shine to one another, and Eddie finds it increasingly hard to handle his own complex feelings for the young girl. BAFTA Award winner West from The Wire and The Crown is the lead protagonist Eddie, with the Olivier and Tony Award nominee Kate Fleetwood playing his wife Beatrice. The brilliant Welsh BAFTA Cymru Award winner Callum Scott Howells from TV’s It's A Sin plays Rodolpho. Nia Towle (Rocketman, Persuasion) and Martin Marquez (Les Misérables, The Crown) also star. It’s going to be amazing...

Great performance for a somehow outdated play
American realism, Miller an example, is a bit outdated, with its intense dramatic moments that, nowadays, serve more the purpose of showing the actors' excellency than that of moving an audience. For some reason, great American playwrights are less able to transcend time, and are shallower in terms of meaning, than great European playwrights. The play is attention-catching but its ending somehow dissatisfying. That said, the actors are so magnificent, and the mise-en-scene so well resolved, that the experience is worth it.

Great acting and realistic storyline for the time it was set in.
Relevant to immigration problems happening now. Obsession , jealousy and love entwined.
